HISTORY

Chickpeas have been a sign of human civilization since the seventh millennium BC. At that time, it was grown in the Middle East. In the Bronze Age, chickpeas appeared in Greece and Rome. In ancient times, chickpea beans were considered as an attribute of Venus (Aphrodite). It was served fried in olive oil and eaten with cheese. Homer’s Iliad is the first written reference to chickpeas.

Since the XVII century, chickpeas have become known almost all over the world. It was used as a coffee substitute in Europe. In Russia, chickpeas came from the Bulgarians and the peoples of Transcaucasia.

Since ancient times, chickpeas have been grown in India and Pakistan. Today, its cultivation is mainly concentrated in Turkey, North Africa, North America, Mexico, and even Australia.
